Originally settled by Irish immigrants as part of historic Corktown, the neighborhood grew alongside Detroit's booming industrial scene, with many residents working in nearby factories and warehouses until the area was split off by the construction of the 75 freeway in the 1960’s. Over the years, North Corktown has evolved, welcoming new waves of residents from various backgrounds and cultures, each contributing to the neighborhood's unique identity.

North Corktown is home to the Fountain Court Cooperative, the largest majority Black-owned housing cooperative in Detroit. With many residents residing in this cooperative for generations. This housing cooperative was a haven for black single mothers in the 1960’s and beyond.
